- Feature
This feature is accessible to Standard, Pro, and Enterprise users. If you’re looking for an elegant and efficient way to keep track of your time-sensitive tasks, the Timeline View and Widget work hand in hand with the Timeline Column to visually display the schedules and due dates of all your active projects. It lets you quickly see the time frame you and your team have to finish a task or project and organize your plans accordingly.
How it works
To utilize the Timeline View or Widget, you must have a time-based column on your board. Please refer to the provided link to determine which columns are required for the Timeline feature.
You can view your timelines in two ways: through a single board view or a Dashboard view. Dashboards enable you to see timelines from various projects in one location, while board views only display the timeline for a particular project.
To include the Timeline View on your board, select the symbol at the top of your board (which displays “Add View” when you hover over it) and choose “More views” from the dropdown menu::
Choose “Timeline”.
Tip: If you want to make the Timeline View your default board view, click on the three-dot menu next to the “Timeline” option in the board view section. From the dropdown menu, select “Set as board default.” To get more information about board defaults, refer to this article’s “Board Default” section.
Add the Timeline Widget on your dashboard
After selecting the desired boards to display:
- Navigate to the Dashboard page and locate the “Add widget” button.
- Click on it and select “Widgets Center
- Inside the Widgets Center, choose the “Timeline” option.
Settings and Customization
You can make your Timeline View or Widget fit your specific needs by customizing it to your preferences. To access the customization options, click on the three dots in the top right corner of your view or widget, and select “Settings” from the dropdown menu.
- Choose time columns
Select the specific time columns that you want to appear on your timeline. You can choose the ones you want to display if you have multiple Timeline, Date, or Week columns.
Tip: You can now use subitems in the Timeline View and widget. In the Settings section, you can select which subitem columns you want to display in the “Choose Timeline columns” option.
- Group timeline bars
In this section, you can customize how the bars are arranged in your timeline view. You can group them based on specific columns or groups on your board. This can help you manage your tasks and resources effectively and provide a clear overview of the project status.
After selecting how you want the timeline bars grouped, you can customize it by collapsing and expanding certain groups. To collapse a group, click on it, and click on it again to expand it.
- Color your items however you want
Customize the appearance of your timeline by selecting the color option that suits your preference. Open the Settings dropdown menu and choose “Color By” to assign colors to items based on the group, column, or board, or choose to have no color at all. The colors will be the same as those selected for your board’s Main Table View.
Time and Date Customization
- Select timeframe
The timeline items can be viewed based on various time scales, such as days, weeks, months, quarters, or years. To choose a specific time scale, click on the drop-down menu at the screen’s top-right corner. Additionally, the ‘+’ and ‘-‘ buttons can zoom in and out within any time scale.
- Set workdays and weekends
You can select which day of the week you want your timeline to start with – Sunday or Monday. To do this, click “Edit” next to “Set workdays” in the settings panel. This will redirect you to your account’s weekday settings, where you can make the changes. For more information, refer to this article.
Note: The ability to set workdays and weekends is restricted to the account admin, and any changes made will be implemented throughout the account.
- Show today indication
The vertical blue bar on your board represents the current date, which helps determine your progress relative to your timeline’s start and end dates. To remove the blue bar, uncheck the “Show Today Indication” option as illustrated in the image.
Include Milestones
Milestones are used to mark significant dates that are not associated with a task or event. Select a date to add a milestone to your timeline and click “Set as a milestone” at the bottom of the calendar pop-up window. The diamond-shaped milestones will appear on your timeline and be colored according to the status label of the item.
If you have a Timeline Column set in Deadline Mode, milestones on your Main Table View will have a diamond to the left that is colored according to the group they belong to. The color of the diamond in Deadline Mode is based on the item’s status. So, if the milestone was completed on time, the diamond will appear green, but if it is overdue, it will appear red.
Note: Adding milestones is exclusively available to users with a Pro plan or higher.
Update your items directly from the view or widget
To make changes or update an item in the Timeline View or Widget, click on any of the bars to open its card. This eliminates the need to navigate back and forth to the Main Board View for updates. The Timeline View or Widget changes are automatically updated within your board.
Tip: To adjust the dates of dependent items on your timeline, select the relevant articles and move their timelines by the desired number of days.
Filter your timeline
To view specific information on your timeline, you can temporarily or permanently apply filters. To do this, click on the filter icon at the top of the screen and choose the filters you want to use, which can be Quick or Advanced.
Tip: The filter icon displays a number that indicates how many filters are currently being applied to your timeline. If you notice that some items are missing, you’ve likely used a filter, so always check the icon to make sure.
Check out The Gantt
If you’re a fan of the timeline feature, you will surely enjoy the Gantt View and Widget just as much! While both display tasks as bars on a calendar, the Gantt View and Widget show jobs in a descending waterfall format for a more detailed visual representation. This highly advanced tool can be tailored to your specific project needs.
